Worlds Oldest Coin

The coin illustrated above is a Lydian electrum third stater, or trite, minted sometime around 610-600 BC in Sardis, Lydia, (current-day Turkey), a country in close geographic and cultural proximity to the Greek colonies in Asia Minor. This type, made of a gold and silver alloy, was in all likelihood, the world’s first coin, minted by King Alyattes.
